It mobilises savings from members provides them with credit facilities and other financial services to improve upon their living standards and that of the community as a whole.
The Nkoranza Area Teachers Co-operative Credit Union, which was founded in 1975 was the brain child of the late Kofi Agyei a.k.a Man Friday, a native of Nkoranza and a teacher at the then Nkoranza Anglican Middle School now known as Nkoranza Anglican Junior High School..
The Union started with a membership of fifty (50), which included Messrs Kofi Agyei, a.k.a Man Friday, Osei Owusu, Kwaku Asante Nketia, Bediako, Philip Asante Kodom, Philip Frempah Kodom, Baffo Nkrumah and A.O. Tawiah among others.
Even though founded in 1975, the union was formally registered with the Credit Union Association of Ghana, CUA on 14th Dec. 1990. NATCU later got affiliated to CUA On 17th May, 1993.
Following the steady growth in the membership the leadership rented a small room for an office in 1991 at Kokofu, a suburb of Nkoranza and in 1992 the office was moved to a more spacious place in a house opposite the Nkoranza Community Centre. In 1999, the union acquired its owned office building which was commissioned by the General Manager of CUA, Mr. Stan Zaatoh.
Through hard work, dedication and commitment by the leadership and the entire members, the NATCU can boast of the following achievements.
- Best Manager Award
- Grade A status since for eleven years
- Best Credit Union in Ghana
- First Credit Union in Brong Ahafo to acquire a duty post car.
- First credit union the Brong Ahafo region to build a permanent office accommodation.
- Offering of financial assistance to brilliant but needy students.
- Voluntary payment of loans by members without recourse to the check off system by the Controller and Accountant Generals Dept.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers, G.N.A.T, NKORANZA district, mindful of the role the NATCU was playing in the economic life of teachers in the district expressed interest in the activities of the union. Consequently, a” gentleman’s agreement” was struck with the District Director at the time, Mr. M. B. K. Mensah, to permit the Manager, Mr. Philip Asante Kodom who was the headteacher of Effah L/A Middle School, to devote more time for the manning of the credit union since there was no supporting staff at the time. The support the district GNAT enjoyed from the GES in this regard was very encouraging.
Successive District Directors, namely; Messrs S.E.K Segbefia, S.K. Okyere, among others gave their blessings to the “tradition”. It was during the time of Mr. S.E.K Segbefia that the then Manager, Mr. Philip Asante Kodom was moved from the classroom to the District Education office to afford him more time to effectively manage the union.
The success story of NATCU cannot therefore be complete without mentioning GNAT and GES.
The Board is grateful to Mr. James Edjei Biney, the District Secretary of GNAT at the time and the District GNAT Executive for their support and co-operation, which have sustained the union to its present status as one of the best credit unions in Ghana.
